The First Morning

Abbey describes his arrival at Arches National Monument as a genesis, a place where the earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. He awakens from sleep to a goal of discovering the fundamental nature of existence, an understanding devoid of anthropocentric values, an inhuman existence — himself. The sun appears and he finds he is not alone though there is not another person within miles. Is he merely a hermit, a recluse, or is he playing a serious game of chance? Read deeply this gem of philosophy.
